Beard Care FAQs

Is beard care a real thing?

Yes. Men have beards. Beards need care.

What's the difference between beard oil, beard balm and mustache wax?

Beard oil is four natural carrier oils and vitamin E with a scent on top. It softens the hair and takes care of the skin underneath. No hold.

Beard balm is the same oils plus shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut oil. Thicker, like cold butter. It does what oil does and adds a little shape. No beeswax.

Mustache wax is beeswax, lanolin and coconut oil. It's a lot stiffer than balm and made for holding a mustache in shape, not for a full beard. We don't make a beard wax. Balm does that job. More on the difference here.

How do I use this stuff?

We get this question a lot. See this page.

How much beard oil should I use? Why does it feel greasy?

If it feels greasy, use less. It's personal, anywhere from 2 to 10 drops depending on length. Start low and adjust.

Technique matters too. Put it on slightly damp hair, right after a shower or a quick rinse. Work it into the skin first, then through the length of the beard. Give it a couple of minutes before you comb or brush. Full walkthrough on the how to use beard oil page.

Can beard oil stop my skin from being itchy?

Yes. The oils and balms nourish the skin under the beard and help with itch and flakes. That's most of what they're for.

Does beard oil make your beard grow?

No. No oil grows hair, ours included. Beard oil softens the beard you have and takes care of the skin under it. If a bottle promises growth, read the label twice.

Does beard oil expire?

Yes. Plan on 1 to 2 years from the day it was mixed. Balm lasts a little longer. Rancid oil smells like old crayons. A 1oz bottle lasts most guys 3 to 4 months, so it rarely gets that far. How to tell if yours has gone bad.

Why is my beard balm gritty, or too hard?

Gritty usually means it got hot in shipping and cooled unevenly. Microwave it in 30 second bursts until it's fully liquid, stir it, then put it in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Bigger jars take longer.

Hard is normal. Balm is stiff like cold butter, and firmness varies a little batch to batch with the cocoa butter. Scrape a little out and melt it between your palms before it goes in your beard.

Can I wash my beard with regular shampoo?

Once in a while, sure. Every day, it'll dry your beard out and make the skin itch. Beard wash vs regular shampoo.

Are your products all natural?

The oils, balms and washes are made from natural ingredients, and the product pages list them in full. Most scents are essential oils. Two aren't: Cherry Bomb is an all-natural fragrance blend, and the green apple in Holiday Spice is a fragrance oil. "All natural" doesn't apply to the combs, scissors, razors or apparel.

Where are your products made?

Beard oil, beard balm, Heavy Beard Oil, mustache wax and All Hair Everywhere are mixed in small batches in Beaumont, Texas. The beard and body wash bar is made for us. Combs, brushes, scissors and shaving gear are sourced, and their pages say so.

Are Texas Beard Co. products tested on animals?

No. We don't test on animals. I am however guilty of playing with my pets after putting on oil or balm. I don't feel like this counts.

What's in the beard oil and balm?

Beard oil is a blend of four natural base oils plus vitamin E, and each scent adds its own blend on top.

  • Jojoba oil: technically a liquid plant wax. It's close to the oil your skin makes on its own, so it absorbs fast.
  • Grapeseed oil: very moisturizing, with a good amount of vitamin E.
  • Avocado oil: vitamins A, B1, B2, D and E. Good for sensitive skin, beard itch and beardruff.
  • Sweet almond oil: vitamins E and D, calcium, potassium and magnesium. Helps with split ends and frizz.
  • Vitamin E (tocopherol): an antioxidant that helps keep the oils from going stale.

Beard balm has the same oils and vitamin E, plus:

  • Shea butter: helps with dry, flaky skin, chapped skin and wind burn.
  • Cocoa butter: helps the beard lay down and makes it easier to manage.
  • Coconut oil: moisture, and it gives the balm its texture.

The butters are naturally deodorized, so the balm doesn't smell like chocolate.
