Why Is My Beard Balm Gritty? (And Why Is It So Hard?)

Short answer: gritty balm got hot on the way to you and cooled back down unevenly. It isn't spoiled, and it takes about a minute to fix. Hard balm is usually just balm. Scrape a little out and melt it in your palms.

Every Texas Beard Co. balm ships with a bright orange card in the bag that says the same thing, because this happens every summer.

Why beard balm turns gritty

Our balm is cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil mixed into the same base oils as our beard oil. No beeswax. Those butters melt in a hot truck or a mailbox in August. When they cool back down slowly, they set up in little grains instead of a smooth block. Same ingredients, different texture.

It's not mold, it's not a bad batch, and it still works. It just feels like sand when you scoop it.

How to fix gritty balm

Melt it all the way down and let it set up fast.

Take the lid off and microwave the jar in 30 second bursts until the balm is fully liquid. No grains left floating in it. Stir it, then put it in the fridge for about 30 minutes. A 4oz jar takes longer than a 2oz, so give it more time on both ends.

When it comes out, it's back to the way it left here.

Why is my beard balm so hard?

Because it's supposed to be. Our balm is stiff like cold butter in the jar. That's the cocoa butter. It goes soft once it warms up.

Firmness also moves a little from batch to batch with the cocoa butter. A firmer jar than your last one is normal, not a defect.

The fix is the step most guys skip. Scrape a small amount out with a fingernail or the back of a fingertip, rub it between your palms until it melts, then work it into your beard from the skin out. If you're trying to smear it straight from the jar into your beard, it's going to feel like a brick.

When it actually has gone bad

Grainy is texture. Bad is smell. If the balm smells sharp or off, like old crayons, it's done. Balm lasts 2 to 3 years stored well, so that's rare. How to tell if beard oil or balm has gone bad.

Keeping it from happening again

Store it somewhere that stays at room temperature. Not the truck, not the windowsill, not next to the shower if your bathroom turns into a sauna. If a package sat on a hot porch, check the jar when you open it and fix it the same day.

Need a new jar? Shop beard balm. Not sure balm is the right product? Beard oil vs beard balm.
