The oil goes on first. A few drops into a damp beard after a shower, worked down to the skin. The balm goes on after for control and a little weight. Scrape out a small amount and melt it between your palms before it goes in. Oil conditions, balm tames, wax keeps the mustache where you put it.
What each one does
Oil is for the skin and for softness. It gets down to the skin, calms the itch and the flakes, and softens the hair. If you could only have one, it would be the oil.
Balm is for shape. It's the same base oils plus cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil, with no beeswax, so it's soft and scoops out easy. It sits on top of the oil and gives a longer beard some weight and a little hold. Together, the oil takes care of the skin and the balm takes care of how the beard looks.
A 1oz bottle of oil lasts most guys 3 to 4 months with daily use. The balm depends on your beard and how much you scoop, so start small and add more.
